Optical components commonly used in medical diagnosis and treatment are biconvex lenses, plano-convex lenses, cemented lenses, optical filters, optical prisms and optical mirrors. Optical lenses are often used as oculars and objective lenses for ophthalmic optical instruments, endoscopes and medical microscopes. Optical filters filter the light beam and reduce the light beam that is not conducive to detection. Optical prisms change the direction of transmission of the light beam. They enlarge or reduce the distance between the object image and the ocular. Optical reflectors change the direction of the beam according to the needs of medical applications, in order to optimize the design of medical instruments. Optical reflectors are used for dental mirrors.

Common medical optical instruments include medical ophthalmology instruments (ophthalmoscopes, fundus testing instruments), medical endoscopes, medical lasers and medical microscopes.
