A plano convex lens is a lens that is flat on the one side and convex on the other. Plano convex lenses converge parallel light, correct the deflected light and convert point light sources into parallel light. When light enters from the convex surface of the plano convex lens, the light will converge to a point on the convex surface. When a point light source enters from the plane of the plano convex lens, the light will be turned into a parallel beam. The focal length of a plano convex lens can vary depending on wavelength.

The Applications of Plano Convex Lenses

Treatment of Hyperopia

Hyperopia is the inability of the eyes to focus on nearby objects. In other words, you can see distant objects clearly, but you will encounter difficulties when looking at nearby objects. Therefore, in order to view nearby objects, a lens with a high degree of curvature is required.

Plano-convex lenses used in glasses can solve this problem. The specific principle is: the distance between the lens of the eye and the retina is very short. Therefore, the imaging focus of hyperopic patients is behind the retina. Glasses with convex lenses will increase the refraction of the glass and shorten the focal length. In this case, the lenses will refract the light before it enters the eye, thereby reducing the image distance. By starting the refraction process before the light reaches the eye, the image can be focused on the surface of the retina.

Imaging

In some applications where the distance between the object and the image is unequal, the asymmetry caused by the flat and convex lenses on one side minimizes spherical aberration.

Plano-convex lenses, like all positive lenses, magnify the object when placed between the object and the human eye. This is because light waves are refracted at a higher angle with respect to the optical axis of the lens. These lenses can be made into different degrees of curvature on the lens, the higher the angle of the lens, the shorter the focal length. Plano-convex lenses are common in imaging equipment telescopes, microscopes and binoculars

Laser Cutting

When laser cutting steel or other thick materials, plano-convex lenses will be an excellent choice. The lens enhances the cutting width of the laser, thereby increasing the ability of the laser to penetrate the material. For these types of cutting applications, these lenses provide greater depth of field, resulting in non-tapered edges.
